ἀρετή

a·rête

Arete is an ancient Greek concept roughly translated as virtue or excellence, but it is perhaps best understood as a duty towards oneself to realize your full potential. As writer and philosopher Robert Pirsig puts it “arete implies a respect of the wholeness or oneness of life, and a consequent dislike of specialization.” I came across the concept of arete during my graduate studies in philosophy and it became a big part of what motivated me to begin resistance training in the first place.  I had been neglecting my body and my physical capacities for a long time, focusing only on academic and intellectual pursuits. I firmly believe every single person should be doing some form of progressive resistance training.  Resistance training is critical for improving metabolic health, bone density and slowing cognitive decline, and is integral to achieving one’s full potential as a powerful and capable person.

Alex Villarreal

I began my training journey nearly a decade ago. I was extremely weak, severely underweight, and struggling with anxiety and depression. Progress was slow and difficult; but during this time, I became obsessed with learning the scientific principles behind proper training, which helped me push forward. Eventually, my training began to have a profound impact on me, both physically and mentally. This transformation was infectious, and I soon began training my family and friends. I then decided to drop out of my graduate program in psychology to pursue training full time.
Since starting my training business five years ago, I have coached people of all shapes and sizes, from all walks of life, from former D1 college athletes to 70 year old grandmothers. When diligently and consistently applied, proper training will have powerful and transformative mental and physical effects on a person. It is my mission to share these benefits with every one of my clients.

Testimonials

“I have been weight training for a few years after years of bike riding and running. Weight training has increased my muscle mass and maintains my fitness level through the long rainy Portland winter. Alex has been extremely good at programming my workouts for my particular needs. I’m 69 years old and I will never give up weight training with Alex as my trainer. His training philosophy is based on scientific research and he includes nutrition planning.”

Meredith

“In the short time I’ve been with Alex, I’ve gained nearly 30 lbs of muscle and doubled my lifts. Even so, I can feel that I’ve only graced the surface of my potential and look forward to many more years of training under him and many more milestones broken.”
Ryan

“I’ve been training with Alex for the past two years and I am thrilled with how far I’ve come. I had never been in a gym and had a lot of anxiety about being in one and just working out in general. Alex has been compassionate, knowledgeable and motivating in helping me to achieve my fitness goals and overcome that anxiety. I can’t imagine that I would have made as much progress as I have without him.”
